How Termite Baiting Systems Work

As the name suggests, the termite baiting system is simply a bait for termites. The termite activity is controlled through this system by deploying ‘tasty treats’ above or below ground. It not only helps attract termites nearby to your home foraging for new food sources , but also causes malformation and controls their growth. This is because modern termite baits consist of an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), – disrupting the normal growth and moulting processes.

Termites feed on the IGR-filled cellulose / wood based ‘treats‘ and pass them on to others in their colony, this is called Trophallaxis and is the exchange of food between two individuals. It leads to the stoppage of termites’ natural moulting process, which is essential for their growth and development. Typically, worker termites must moult at least four times in their life cycle. Worker termites regularly tend to – and feed the King and Queen – the breeding pair, with the bait as well.

Thanks to the bait, the active constituent contained within prevents the regrowth of the termites’ external skeleton, (exoskeleton) eventually leading to their death. This can be by fungal or bacteria imbalance, desiccation, injury, starvation and of course – malformation. Over time, termites cannibalize other dead termites, causing further collapse in the population and the entire termite colony is eliminated.

Choosing C&C Pest Control for your termite baiting service technician offers long-term savings by catching and addressing termite issues early on. Early identification helps you avoid expensive structural repairs, keeping your property safe and intact for the years ahead.

The Termite Baiting System Process

Termite Baiting Installation

Initially, termite baiting systems are placed in the soil or other surface throughout the outer perimeter of the structure/s. In the case of a property, they are strategically positioned along the dripline at 2 to 3 metre spacings. The injection moulded bait stations typically contain wood, and / or other cellulose containing material which attracts the termites to the stations to start feeding.

Termite Inspection

These installed termite baiting systems are inspected in a couple of months or periodically as decided by our master termite inspector, Jamie. Typically, monitoring visits are scheduled at between 8-12 weekly intervals – and can be as short as 2-3 weekly intervals. If termites are present in the area, evidence of their existence will be seen as they will be attracted to the stations and timber interceptors inside the stations and start feeding on the added bait.

Addition of Termite Baiting Treats

Upon the inspection of each termite baiting station, evidence of existence is observed as the wooden interceptors show that termites have been or are feeding on the wood and termite species is identified. The termite bait is added to the active baiting stations.

What is Termite Bait?

Termite bait is a combination of cellulose and a slow-acting substance (containing IGR), a chitin synthesis inhibitor and is explicitly designed to act as an attractive food source for the termites.

Once the termite bait is added to the termite baiting stations, termites start feeding on it. Due to termites’ social culture, they feed on it and also share the treats with the termite Queen and King and others in the colony.

As termite bait stops the natural growth of termites by preventing moulting, it leads to the slow death of the entire colony over the course of the next few months. (Chitin is what makes up the termite’s external skeleton.)

Perimeter Placement of Termite Baiting Systems

Just like a chemical treatment, the termite baiting stations are installed or placed around the property’s entire perimeter. This includes placing termite baiting stations under pavers, or in concrete such as driveways or patio slabs. For optimal installation, it might be necessary to core holes in tiled areas and paths.

Placement Distance

The distance between the termite baiting stations plays a crucial role. The placement should be such that termites are intercepted before they reach the building. The exact distance can vary depending on various factors, but typically. it’s around 2 to 3 metres.

Latest Termite Baiting Systems

As the termite treatment industry evolves, new termite baiting options are making their way into the market. Some of the new products to hit the market are termite baiting systems that come pre-dosed with bait. It means there is no need to add the termite bait once termite activity is detected.

These new types of termite baiting systems work around the clock to protect your property from termites, the moment that they are in the ground.

However, these systems must continue to be inspected and monitored multiple times each year, typically between 2 and 4 visits throughout the year to ensure everything is in good working order and also to determine if bait needs to be replenished.
